ASUS Zenfone 3 Zoom and Zenfone VR, mobile cameras become protagonists

ASUS wants its smartphones to become important in an otherwise competitive market, and even saturated will say some, where the options are reduced and it becomes necessary the much-mentioned innovation. ASUS seems to be clear, and this time has presented the renovation of its Zenfone range, where the most important feature are the cameras. Yes, in the plural.

ASUS today introduced the new Zenfone 3 Zoom and Zenfone VR, both focused on photographic experience and augmented reality in the case of RV. An interesting bet focused on mobile photography that continues to gain ground and where the Taiwanese company seeks to position itself before the competition. We have had a chance to try both devices for a few minutes, and then have our first impressions.

Zenfone 3 Zoom: 12x to dominate mobile photography

Let’s go first with the Zenfone 3 Zoom. This device has a discrete and sober design, with plastic materials without any special mark. The back is flat and at times feels slippery, but it should be mentioned that the cameras do not protrude, this despite its large battery. Its dimensions are kept in the average of the smartphones with 5.5 inches, that is to say, it is not the largest but handles well to a hand.

The screen has Full HD resolution and it is not designed to break records, it fulfills its work although increasing the brightness will see how the colors fade slightly, as in certain angles of vision.

Within performance, the Zenfone 3 Zoom feels fluid, with fast transitions and agile menu changes. What is most striking is the activation of the camera from rest, which is hardly perceived since in less than seconds the camera will be ready to capture, something that is obvious to a certain extent because it is a mobile centered on Photography.

But what is undoubtedly the most attractive part is its dual camera, which has everything you need for manual scene control, intuitive menus, RAW capture, and an easy-to-use zoom that slightly exceeds what is shown by the iPhone 7 Plus. Among the zoom options, we have available up to 2.3x, but if we pull the digital we go up to 12x magnification, with their respective loss of quality and presence of noise in the photos.

In the first tests we did with the camera we obtained good results, but here it is necessary to mention that these were ideal conditions created by ASUS to make your mobile look, so we will have to see the results in other conditions in the day to day. Autonomy is another of those factors that we will have to thoroughly test in a future analysis, since the 5000 mAh battery promises.

Zenfone VR: ASUS Dares with Technology in Diapers

Interesting bet is what ASUS is doing when daring with a mobile equipped with Tango, Google’s augmented reality technology, making it the second mobile in the market. We say that it is a bold decision as this technology looks interesting in the future, not today, since we only have 35 applications that take full advantage of the potential, where performance and performance is still quite erratic.

Of course, it should be noted that the Zenfone VR is much more attractive than that huge and impossible to handle Lenovo PHABP2 Pro, because here the dimensions are reduced to 5.7 inches screen, feels light, and is more stylized than the Of Lenovo and even better looking than the Zenfone 3 Zoom.

The rear has an attractive finish that simulates leather, which means that we have greater friction and is easier to manipulate a hand. We even have a slight rear curvature that adds value to ergonomics.

As in the Zenfone 3 Zoom, the screen is Full HD and meets without being spectacular. The performance is remarkable and it shows a good optimization of the layer on Android, since the transitions between menus and screens are fluid. The problem comes when we want to use applications optimized for Tango, which is when the mobile suffers, heats up, and even closes the application.

It is curious how ASUS did not have available Tango applications to show in the press demos, since the only one that was available did not work well, so they focused on showing the device as a smartphone more and some functions under Daydream. Here again we see, as in the case of Lenovo, that this Zenfone VR is more an experiment than a device that will bring a significant change to the market, and eye, we do not say that Tango is not revolutionary, on the contrary, the point is that not yet Is ready and feels more like a development that has not come out of the beta phase.

It will be necessary to give time to the time, and hope that the Zenfone VR came to the market to be able to analyze it in depth and thus to know its true potential, since in these first impressions its performance like piece of change is hardly anecdotal, since the key element that Is augmented reality was not yet available.
