With the start of the course in the university, school or even work, many of us considered the renovation of the laptop to study, work or simply as a central element of leisure (games included) at home. Now, choosing the most suitable laptop is not something simple. Take note of the tips, recommendations or aspects to take into account when choosing the laptop based on your budget, with recommended models in different price ranges.
What to keep in mind before choosing a laptop according to our budget?
The budget is one of the pillars that support much of the decision to choose a laptop or another. Although we should never forget that the use we are going to give to this new equipment is another key element when choosing a laptop and in many cases more decisive, in the end, the money that we can spend is going to make us make the last decision.
The combination of benefits and good price is almost impossible, and the common thing will be to sacrifice certain aspects depending on the money that we want to spend as well as the type of equipment we want to buy. Thus, although there are aspects where we do not recommend lowering the requirements too much, choosing a model with more screen, lighter or more outstanding specifications will depend on what we are going to allocate that equipment for.
Lightness and autonomy
If the laptop you want to buy is going to have a fairly intensive use outside the home, it is essential that you meet low weight and battery conditions with good autonomy. Forget then of great diagonals and by general normal, cheap prices.
Ultrabooks, a category in which these devices would fit, sacrifice performance, screen resolution or storage capacity if we do not have a bulky budget and want to achieve low weight and long autonomy. The usual thing is that these teams use SSD units but not excessive capacity without the price rising significantly. With them, in addition to better performance, we achieve quiet operation, lower consumption and little weight.
We may be tempted to choose a cheaper ultrabook that does not have an SSD, but it would be a mistake. It is better to reduce the budget in other sections of the same team but not in having an SSD.
Another way to lower the cost of a laptop is with the materials . The lightest equipment or of aesthetic care resort to materials such as carbon fiber or light metal alloys such as magnesium, one of the most used. If it is not your main concern, you can opt for less stylized designs and where the plastic remains the material used . But keep in mind that refrigeration, especially in equipment that does not have fans, will be less efficient (and more annoying the heat) in equipment with a design based on plastic.
Do not forget about connectivity, especially nowadays. Getting lighter and thinner notebooks has led to reduce the number and type of ports, so the need for several USB ports or even specific connectors such as HDMI or DisplayPort ports, requires a more accurate search to not miss them later.

Screen size and resolution
Among cheaper laptops, it is increasingly common to find models with a rather reduced diagonal, below 12 inches. If we add that the resolution and quality of the screen is not usually its strong point, the result would be a comfortable equipment to transport but with which we could not work long due to these limitations of the screen. Unless the use is going to be very sporadic, do not sacrifice either in size of screen or resolution of it. Or at least adjust that relationship in the best possible proportion.
Choosing smaller screens makes sense in convertible equipment, where removing the keyboard or turning the screen, we will be able to use the device as a tablet if it also has touch technology on the screen. This “extra” can raise the price of the equipment, so make sure you use it. If the screen is very large or the equipment weighs a lot, it can become that functionality for which you paid more money and never took advantage.
If the laptop we are looking for is to play as well as to edit videos or photography, or where we want to have a lot of information on the screen, in addition to the processor, RAM or a good SSD, we must choose models with at least 1080p screen. resolution and a diagonal that makes its use comfortable during long sessions, so at least it should offer us 15 inches.
Also, do not forget to try both touchpad and keyboard on your future laptop if you have the opportunity to do so. If the keyboard does not convince you, for example, and you need to write a lot, it is better to look for alternatives that, although they are more expensive, give us better travel and quality in construction. And if you plan to use it at night or in low light, a backlit keyboard is key.
Power and RAM
When it comes to choosing a laptop, the numbers related to the capabilities of the processor, the graphics card, the hard disk or the amount of RAM we tend to want to be as large as possible. And with it the price is usually increased.
In computers for home use or for office automation, the graphics card is an element that we can ignore with the latest processors in the market, which have better integrated graphic solutions, in some cases equaling the performance of the most basic dedicated graphics. If in spite of everything you need the laptop to integrate a dedicated solution, choose the range you really need according to the use and you can save a lot. Usually high-end graphics or more performance do not offer the best value for money.
About processors and RAM, in non-specific equipment such as to play or edit video / photography, better prioritize the latter if we have to adjust the budget, as we will notice more on a daily basis. As a general rule it is preferable to combine an average processor with more RAM, for example 8 GB minimum, than to opt for a high-end processor but accompanied by low memory, something that occurs in some very tempting offers in the market. And beware of the equipment that does not allow later expansion of RAM.
Finally, do not forget that while it is good to take advantage of an offer adjusted to our current need, the useful life of the equipment will not be the same as if we have slack in the specifications.
