HP Omen X Notebook: Three-level overclocking and NVIDIA’s brown beast for an unlimited gaming experience

With the rise of virtual reality and the augmented, eSports and the ever burning world of gaming to computer manufacturers never run out of challenges, and HP takes a time dedicated to the latter with the Omen and Omen X families. now for laptops after the HP Omen X, and in fact the new proposal inherits the name of that unique team: the HP Omen X Notebook.

Something more than a year ago since the brand presented a line of portable gaming (in addition to other devices), although it was the Omen family “to dry”. This time it is portable equipment for the Omen X line, which is focused to bring gaming to the most fanatic player (as defined by the brand), trying to bring the newest and most powerful in hardware to this user profile.

Overclocking: objective and starting point

When analyzing the HP Omen X (the desktop) we already commented that the team was prepared for the user who wanted that extra that supposes the overclocking and also to support it (at the level of avoiding overheating). This feature was also considered in the gaming backpack that also has this line of HP, the HP Omen X Compact Desktop, which included the GeForce GTX 1080 that we see in some of the configurations of the new laptop.

In this case they have focused on this, talking about the equipment being designed for overclocking, textually, and applying it to three levels: CPU, GPU and RAM. That yes, it will depend on which equipment of the three available configurations we have, since in the case of the processors only the i7 7820K allows overclocking (only the Intel with the “K” by last name do it).

As for the graphics, according to the team we will have a GeForce GTX 1070 or the current beast of NVIDIA, the GTX 1080, both with the possibility of overclocking. The base and accelerated frequencies in standard use or overclocking according to HP are the following …

NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 1070 Base frequency: 1442 MHz Accelerated frequency: 1645 MHz Base frequency: 1480 MHz Accelerated frequency: 1695 MHz
NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 1080 Base frequency: 1,556 MHz Accelerated frequency: 1733 MHz Base frequency: 1582 MHz Accelerated frequency: 1771 MHz

With regard to the overclocking of RAM, there is the option of the computer coming with RAM DDR4-2800 with support for Intel XMP, the profiles of this manufacturer to be able to get more out of RAM with this method.

Do not get hot and do not get old

Optical drives in laptops have been in danger of extinction for some years in laptops with the expansion of ultrabooks and the use of space in an increasingly narrow chassis. The Omen X Notebook also dispenses with it, despite not being a thin laptop (in the absence of knowing the thickness data are almost 5 kilograms of computer), especially to make room for something basic in a gaming notebook : avoid overheating.

What this computer includes is a piping system (multipipe) combined with a steam chamber and several fans to reduce the risks of heating one level more than in the previous equipment, although in our experience the manufacturer already took care of this aspect even in the backpack-PC. From the ventilation system what can be seen with the naked eye are the large grids of the box.

In addition to ensuring that the interiors are heated as little as possible (and ventilated to the maximum), there is the possibility of upgrading the equipment at the hardware level. This is something that is taken into account the greater the investment, and in this case both RAM and SSD are completely updatable and, they qualify, quite simple (taking into account this for the design and composition of the components), looking for the DIY component (“do it yourself”) without requiring specific tools (just a regular screwdriver).

Personalization beyond hardware: The Omen Command Center

Following the key claim of this team, overclocking, HP has a software tool so that the user has better control of everything that runs. The Omen Command Center allows different management of the computer hardware as well as having the direct data of the percentage of use and / or the temperature of some components.

The interface is apparently quite intuitive and little loaded (of course, with dark theme), having different tabs depending on the functions (overclocking, optimizing networks, etc.). From this utility the user can, in addition to perform hardware tests and customize the use of it, configure the lighting of keyboard and chassis, as well as save macros of key combinations for games.

We have two screen options according to the user’s requirement, starting with a 1080p resolution and giving the option of configurations that integrate a 4K monitor, screens designed for games, although they are not incompatible with other uses such as video editing or photography (calibrating them). In addition, the computer supports the connection of three external monitors and for the audio it integrates Bang & Olufsen speakers.

Other elements that stand out in the design are the USB in red (whatever they are, priority here in the colors of gaming and family), ensuring from the brand that for the placement of the ports of entry and exit have had in account which are the most comfortable locations for gamers (pulling feedback) and the mechanical keyboard. This, in addition to the possibilities of personalization that we have commented, has N-Key and an RGB LED on each key, with 2.55 millimeters of travel and a large space bar.

HP Omen X Notebook, price and availability

At the moment HP has provided the information in reference to the price in dollars. The HP Omen X Notebook part of the $1999, corresponding to the model that integrates the Intel Core i7-7700HQ, 1080p screen, 16 GB of RAM and GeForce GTX 1070 graphics. Above this is the model with that CPU but with 4K screen, GeForce GTX 1080 GPU and 32GB of RAM for $2349 and superior configuration with the 7820K i7 for $3699.

It will begin to be available in November, we are waiting for moment to know exactly in which, and also to see if we have occasion to test the portable equipment of this line of HP with the good taste of mouth that left us the after-dinner. Of course, as in that case we already see that the Omen X Notebook is only for certain pockets especially if we talk about what would be the top of the range.
